Frosty Morning Murray Cod Fishing

After seeing the videos of the all-new Berkley Shimma Pro-Rig lures on the Berkley social media pages, Todd and I both looked at each other and said, “Cod Lures”. Immediately we knew these are going to be unreal on the big motley green fish – Murray cod. They clearly work exceptionally well for barra, so we couldn’t wait to put one in front of our favourite species.

Without hesitation we jumped onto the computer to see what colours were available and placed our orders. A few days later there was a knock on the door, they had arrived. “What are we doing Saturday morning? Cod fishing!”

The morning was frosty with a hint of rising mist as we made our way to our favour green fish haunt in eager anticipation. Our first casts broke the glassed-out water and sent rings of ripple across the water. We both allowed the Pro-Rig to sink gracefully through the water column to our desired depth then cranked our reels into gear. With a pulsing action visible on the rod tip, our Pro-Rigs were slow rolled back to the boat with a nervous feeling that the inevitable cod strike that often feels like the rod is going to be ripped from your hands could happen at any second. Second cast up against one of the many granite boulders and I’m on! The Pro Rig 6.5” in Green Neon had done the job gracefully. After the usual photo session, the green fish was released.

A few casts later and Todd was on with a nice healthy green fish from a well-placed cast up in under an overhanging granite boulder on the Pro-Rig 6.5” in Pearl White Silver.

The Shimma Pro-Rig comes in three sizes 4.5”, 5.5” and 6.5”and weights of 18g, 30g and 50g respectively. Available in 10 awesome colours that will entice any weary Murray Cod or other piscatorial predator. Colours include Green Neon, Pearl White Silver, Chartreuse, Chartreuse Silver, Oliver Glitter, Pink Glitter, Dirty Perch, Midnight Tiger, Purple Haze, and Silver Ghost.

The Shimma Pro Rig is ideal for both rivers and impoundments where fish hide amongst standing and fallen trees as they will quite happily hop over snags and rock with minimal snagging. Armed with an ever-trustworthy Owner STX treble to maximise hook up rates and to hold that fish of a lifetime.

Made from TPE material, we found that the lure was like new even after a few hours of bashing through structure – impressive! The paddle tail produces a massive vibration in the water which helps fish find the lure which is perfect for us low light fisherman. This can be felt all the way back to rod, making it easy to know the lure is working

If you haven’t already, head to your local tackle store and invest in the all new Shimma Pro-Rig, you won’t be sorry.

Upon arriving at Cape York for our annual barra trip, the anticipation of hooking into some good fish was intensifying. If you were to ask me what I thought the most temperamental, tenacious species to chase was, I would without a doubt tell you impoundment barramundi!
